Road To Caffeine: Your Guide to CT Coffee

The coffee culture in Australia is out of this world, so moving to Connecticut was an adjustment! My mission has been to find all the great coffee spots - basically #willtravelforcoffee no matter how far. I’ve compiled my favorite go-to coffee spots I’ve found so far!

Rebel Dog Coffee Co - Plainville CT

1. Rebel Dog Coffee Co - Plainville

A relative new-comer to the Connecticut coffee scene, Rebel Dog Coffee Co started as a coffee truck and has since grown into the cafe along Route 10 in Plainville. Small, but cosy, Rebel Dog offers artisan coffee, a breakfast and lunch menu (that you can take out or eat in) and a nice place to relax. This is my favorite spot to come and work the day away in a nice environment - in fact, I’m writing this as I sit here right now!

Story and Soil - Hartford CT

2. Story & Soil - Hartford

Story & Soil opened this past Summer in the up-and-coming Capitol Avenue in Hartford. A tiny indoor space with only nine seats, these are serious coffee experts with a passion for what they do. Although small, the space is inviting and the decor is eclectic but it works perfectly. Offering a multi-roast format, Story & Soil offers coffee from nearby roasters and strives to bring the community together through its space.

4. Giv Coffee - Canton

A roaster and cafe, Giv provides its coffee wholesale to many coffee shops in the area. Located in a small, quaint cottage in Canton, enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and a perfect cup of coffee. This is my go-to place when I feel like going for a drive and settling into the cozy space for an afternoon coffee. Giv roasts, packages, brews and serves its coffee all from the one roof - an impressive operation!

5. Cookshop Plus - West Hartford

Not just a coffee shop - Cookshop Plus in West Hartford Center offers a coffee bar in the middle of their kitchenware and housewares retail store. Hailing from Australia, they opened the coffee bar in order to provide a high quality cup of coffee in the Australian style. Using NEAT Coffee, they’re proud to support other local CT businesses. Sit at the bar and plan your shopping, or take your coffee to go. They’re always happy to talk to you about Australia and anything coffee! (*Editor's note: Full disclosure, Samantha and her family own this fine establishment - however we still concur with her ranking and their place on this list. Go, shop, enjoy the coffee!)

Recently re-vamped, the space is inviting and the perfect place enjoy an afternoon. The staff go through a vigorous training process, so you’re sure to get the perfect coffee every time.

8. J Rene - West Hartford

This West Hartford institution located in the Park Road area has a serious following. They roast their own beans and offer an artisanal menu - you’ll find Siphon Pots, Chemex and French Press alongside espresso drinks. There’s just something about a place where the baristas sport formal shirts and ties - it definitely completes the experience!

A unique concept, Heirloom Market is a natural foods market with a cafe on one side. They take it one step further with heirloom seeds and gardening supplies sold in an adjoining historic building. They have adopted a true “seed to plate” dining experience. Serving locally roasted coffee along with fresh baked pastries and sandwiches, it is a perfect relaxing weekend spot.
